There is another way to boost speed, although I'm not sure how to do it. Get the 2Mbps limited MTNL connection. Open up your modem (and void your warranty). There will be three wires going into the phone wire. Two are for sending and receiving packets. One is for additional info from MTNL (like speed, download limit, etc). You cut this wire insulation to reveal two entwined uninsulated wires. Cut one, and MTNL will give you full speed, but any download info will not go from your modem to MTNL.
Of course, I don't even know if this works or not. A friend told me this, and it may be complete rubbish as well.

Okkay i am really late to reply on this post but just read it….this is an invalid post and the method suggested above is only an authorization for pppoe which is already done during the first setup. or else or internet shoudnt work.

There are hardly any ways in which you can boost MTNL speed....any rookies reading this post do not try the above method...

@metaphor: Damn. That was the topic for my next post :( That's exactly what I did. I had the 400 MB 199 Plan, and now I changed it to unlimited. Exactly in the middle of the month. And on the 2nd of the next month, net worked like a dream!

And BTW its practically inpossible to boost your speed from your modem since speeed is regulated from server,

its RTOS out there managing the whole show.and it wont let you enter and tweak the mainframe... your modem is just a bus to carry packets from server to your local machne
