Install Windows Media Player 11 In A Non-Genuine Windows XP

Pretty long title for a good post. Well, at least I think it is a good post.

So after a couple o’ years of Windows Genuine DisAdvantage, Microsoft suddenly verified my Windows XP key as non-genuine, and declared me to be “a victim of software counterfeiting”.

And I wanted WMP11, which is a part of the so-called Windows Genuine Advantage, i.e Microsoft’s policy of providing good downloads only to Windows XP licensed copy buyers, not pirated versions.

So here’s how you can easily install WMP11 on your non-genuine Windows XP. Here’s what you need

1] The Windows Media Player executable. DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT FROM MICROSOFT’S HOME PAGE. Get it from here, or here. If none of these work, Google for it, useless.

2] WinRAR. Get it from here.

3] Fifteen minutes 😉 [Actually, this depends on the speed of you internet connection, and the resources of your PC]

Here are the steps. Follow them in the exact order, after turning off your Internet Connection.

1] After you’ve downloaded Windows Media Player 11 from the given links, and also installed WinRAR, right-click on the executable i.e wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu, and click Extract to wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu/. This will only work if you have WinRAR installed. (I guess other archivers such as PeaZip might work as well, but you see, this is tried and tested]

2] After the extraction is done, open the wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu folder. You’ll see this big list of files. Ignore all, but the last two rows, which is full of icon-less executables.

3] Now, run the wmp11 file. Follow the procedure, and finish the install. Go to Start, All Programs, and click on Windows Media Player. You should now be greeted by these windows, which’ll make you feel WMP11 is already installed. Choose Custom Settings in this, click Next and…

… uncheck all the boxes in this, and click Next.

4] Now, you must see an error, telling you that the wrong version of WMP is here when something else was expected, or some crap like that. Click No, and go back to the wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu folder (which you saw in Step 2).

5] Install all the remaining executables, in the exact order I tell you (They’re all in the same order anyway):

1] umdf

2] WindowsXP-MSCompPackV1-x86

3] wmdbexport

4] wmfdist11

5] wmpappcompat

Installing all these should be easy, as all you have to do is click Next. One thing though, do check those boxes, which prompt you to restart Windows. Notice that I’ve left out wmp11, as you’ve already installed that.

6] Now, re-install wmp11, and re-do Step 3. Now…

… Ka-chow!

Hope this worked for you (it sure did for me and a couple others). Comment if it worked, or didn’t!

Do I have to uninstall the old Windows Media Player, the one that’s already installed, first before I start installing WMP 11? Thanks. Please email me for your response. I bookmarked your blog but I might forget.

    • Ramakrishna · May 22, 2012

  3. Aditya · January 22, 2009

@piscianemperor: The site you mentioned tells you to download another 3rd party file. These usually harm the computer. Ususally. Not always. Some faulty registry entries, some keys deleted here and there and BOOM! You never know…

With this method, you ensure the system safety. However, thanks for that link! I’ll update this post soon. Look out!

  4. rishabh · May 1, 2009

it looks gr8 bt wil it work
and also try to be brief

    • Aditya · May 2, 2009

Well, it is great, and works perfectly well.
About being brief, it doesn’t help many others who are not so well versed in technology. And performing such a highly dangerous manner which may end up corrupting Windows, definitely requires a detailed explanation.

    hi i want to reges

  12. lasy · July 1, 2009

It didnt work for me, when i try to install, your step3 it doesnt show the same as you, it asks directly to verify copy of windows xp and doesnt allow me to do anything.

    • Aditya · July 1, 2009

Well, it actually happens if you have already tried installing WMP11 using the usual setup technique. Unfortunately, I did the mistake of installing WMP11 directly after re-installing Windows. I’ve been working on your problem as soon as I read your comment. Will respond when I solve it.

  13. lasy · July 1, 2009

no need for all this, just download and run an regist file and your windows copy will be genuine. Here´s the link:
    much easier XD

  18. Jayant · September 4, 2009

    really it works.

  19. Mike · September 13, 2009

it didnt work for me when i execute it from the start menu to use it, a deal comes up and it says wmp has encounter a error and has been closed and after that somthing called dr watson debugger comes up and when i go to dont send, it closes thus returning me to the desktop.

    • Aditya · September 14, 2009

That is strange. Must be a corrupt setup, because that is when Dr. Watson pops his ugly head. Try downloading it again. Also, make sure that you have already not tried installing WMP11 before.
Which OS are you on BTW?

  20. NANU · September 21, 2009

    U ARE REALLY COOL………..:-)

    • Aditya · September 24, 2009

      Thanks 😉
I think the same/similar methods should work for IE8/IE7 as well.

  21. noob · September 24, 2009

omg, after u uncheck all the boxes in step 3, there are other 2 parts!! what will i do with them? >.<"

    • Aditya · September 24, 2009

Er, what other two parts? I’m not so clear…

    • lupin · December 26, 2013

the parts are uneccessary for this process. just un-check any boxes there.

fyi, those part asked if you want to creat desktop launch icon or something like that. the second ask to choose what video to play. not something that should interfere this installation.

i also freak out when i install wmdbexport nothing show up. but i made sure i click it. then i proceed to install the rest. it still works!! also when he said uncheck boxes when the computer asked to restart it actually confused means do not restart..keep installing.. then back to step three again as he said. then *blink* work like a charm.

computer is difficult i swear.. thanks dude who post this. win 11 makes my life good muah*

Now what do you actually do?…Highlight the last two rows and open?…

    Hey Aditya,

I’ve followed all the steps carefully and it isin’t working for me!!
I’ve got XP Pro SP3 installed..
I found the same method on one of the other pages and followed the instructions carefully…when I did everything and rebooted the system and tried running the Windows media player, The same Validation Window popped.

after I googled it, I found your page and downloaded it again from the links you posted.

when I installed the wmp11.exe and clicked the windows media player in programs. The validation window popped again.
I closed the validation window and installed all the components (self-extracting files).

wmdbexport.exe and wmpappcompat.exe didn’t instal… I mean when i double clicked them, nothing showed up..I’ve also right clicked and selected “open” from the list..nothing showed up.

Could you please help me with this?
I know it’s a very long explanation…but thought that the smallest detail could help you see where it’s going wrong.

P.S I’ve also tried the reshack method…t didn’t work too.

Thank you very much for this.I got a new HTC W8S phone that gives me a hard time with placing music on it.And somewhere in that process I needed to install wmp (so I did it the way you bolded not to do) and after some struggle everything works great and I have wmp again 🙂 (except my phone,it still refuses to sync so I can place music on it )
